Beaucarnea recurvata is a hardy, slow-growing houseplant native to the deserts of Mexico and parts of Central America. In its natural habitat it can grow up to 9 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 3 feet. But when grown in a pot as a houseplant, it usually stays much smaller though some specimens achieve 5 to 6ft in height. This plant's bulbous base resembles the shape of an elephant's foot hence it's common name.. The leaves have a waxy coating that protects them from the harsh desert climate where they originate.
