Ode to the Alocasia: July's Favourite Plant

Not everyone will immediately know which plant you're referring to when you mention 'Alocasia.' Such a shame, because this houseplant is truly remarkable. As far as we're concerned, this green beauty deserves more recognition simply because it's such a unique species of plant. It comes in various types and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: their striking and beautiful leaves. Their broad heart- or arrowhead-shaped, textured leaves can have flat or wavy edges, and their distinctive veins are also worth admiring. Allow us to introduce you to your new best friend!

Alocasia Varieties

Alocasias have an incredibly impressive presence. Effortlessly, these plants add style and ambiance to your space, particularly due to their extraordinary often XXL-sized leaves and leaf patterns. It's no surprise they're also known as elephant ears. They come in various varieties, each with its own size and peculiarities. The most well-known varieties include:

  • Alocasia zebrina
  • Alocasia polly
  • Alocasia cucullata
  • Alocasia wentii
  • Alocasia black velvet
  • Alocasia amazonica
  • Alocasia macrorrhiza

Perhaps the zebrina is our favorite. After all, it has a compact size that allows it to shine in any corner of your home. The striped stem also gives the plant a highly exotic vibe. It brings us joy!

Placement of my Alocasia

They may all look slightly different, but they share many similarities, such as their care requirements. Alocasias are subtropical plants native to Asia and Australia. In the wild, these plants grow beneath a canopy, so Alocasia naturally develops large leaves to capture enough sunlight. These fast-growing houseplants can produce new leaves almost weekly when actively growing. The amount of light the plant receives determines how quickly it grows. The plant will survive but won't grow as rapidly when placed in a corner with less light. However, be cautious of direct sunlight as it can cause leaf burn.

How do I care for my Alocasia?

Water your Alocasia when the top few centimeters of soil are dry. Alocasias have an average watering requirement and prefer to partially dry out between waterings. They don't like waterlogged, soggy feet, so it's better to underwater than overwater. If it weren't for its beauty, it would require little attention! Rotate the pot a quarter turn when watering to ensure the plant receives even sunlight and prevent it from growing towards the light and becoming top-heavy. During the coldest months of the year when the plant isn't actively growing, you'll need to water even less.

Buying Elephant Ear plants at The Plant Room in Richmond

All Alocasia varieties thrive in loose, nutrient-rich potting soil and high humidity. Avoid placing the plant near an external door, drafty window, or next to a heat source. Temperature fluctuations can hinder growth and potentially damage the leaves. If you're curious about which Alocasia varieties we sell at our shop in Richmond, you're welcome to visit The Plant Room!
